Nationals Nanny state Posted: Tue Sep 30, 2008 8:48 am
RUTH HILL - The Dominion Post | Tuesday, 30 September 2008
Shopkeepers say their profits will go up in smoke if the [Nat] Government follows a recommendation to outlaw in-store tobacco displays.
SNIP
National MP Jo Goodhew said its four MPs on the committee had voted against the ban because they believed "more robust international evidence" was needed.
Smoking rates had already dropped from 23.4 per cent in 2002-03 to 18.87 per cent in 2006-07 without a ban.
"We're not ruling it out, but we would like to see an evidence-based approach to this ... Some New Zealanders will see this as the nanny state butting in again."

End quote.
Its seems National consider Govt interfering with the sales of a PROVEN health danger is nanny state , but continue to ensure nanny state take a different view to to cannabis PROVEN to be of considerably less of a concern , in fact is now well proven to have considerable upside for many.
I wonder if they were influenced by one of the FIVE so called expert reports produced by Crosby Textor, funded by the British American Tobacco down here in the South Paciifc. Wonder who did the lobbying utilising these reports that were very convincing in proving to remove the walls of shame (Gig displays ) would be the wrong way to go.
A good PR firm, with deep pocket clients can sway the feeble mind.. as this instance well examples.
I am just envious that the CLR advocates don't have the funds to buy the best brains and the politicians ...
means we end up with a nanny who does not have our best interests at heart, but those best interests of who manipulate them.
I'm feeling rather concerned Tony, we are heading into a recession that will last awhile and a good chance the nats will be in charge, thats if the polls remain true. So looks like more unemployment is in my future, if it happens I might be able to convince the missus in crossing the ditch and give this corrupt country the one finger wave, there is so much bs going on at higher levels, so much corruption and they are all getting away with it.
I reckon it's going to happen like this:
Nats win election
referendum on MMP, and get rid of it, take full control
get rid of the maori seats
privatise everything
retire on some mansion in Hawaii living off the backhanders he got from his corporate mates while in office
and who gives a fuck about nz...
Also just remembered, John Key when he worked for ML was buying and selling NZ dollars for his bosses to devalue our dollar he was doing it in $50 million lots.... _________________ A pain free day the marijuana way.
Trouble is MNG , the word coming from across the ditch is not all good.. lack of water and Ore prices tumbling , the credit squeeze coming, things could go tits up for them in bigger way than here.
We just need to hope Fonterra don't get roped into the contamination shambles and hit too hard financially and our primary dairy products still have a market.
I think unless Key or one of his cronies stuff it up we will have a National Govt .. The big unknown is if they will do it alone or with close allies such as ACT or need a coalition partner or partners .. such as Dunne , MParty .
As a one eyed narrow minded pro medpot who's only focus is CLR , and who accepts odds on the Nats will get the numbers , I kinda hope they can go alone .. One guy ,Dunne , a sure fired coalition partner would stuff up any hope of CLR .
Be nice if swing voters gave ALCP the tick to show the Nats the sort of public support there is out there.
There must be a sinificant number of voters who have a guts full of Labour , Greens who would jump off a cliff before they voted for the Nats, a vote for ALCP might be a great way to display disleasure and stick it to them..
Send a powerful message to the nats as well.
Don't start me on Fonterra... global price of milk went down 38% this year yet we are still paying top dollar.
Dairy farmers learned from Telecom that by using a monopoly on a small country means you can squeeze more money out of the population, oh and the com com is currently doing some long winded study of the pricing of milk blah blah
This country is so twisted in favour of corporates it's a wonder the people haven't revolted already.
none of the current parties in govt already are getting my votes, none have shown any improvement in wages, none have improved my state of health and none have given a shit about people with disabilities, oh until now - election time... _________________ A pain free day the marijuana way.
Don't get me started on Telecon! haha. They are still up to their old corporate games of not giveing two shits about customers. Please, I implore every one...Do NOT...use Telecum products or services in any shape or fashion just because...jah dig? You can make a difference if you are a concientious consumer and do not reward thieves. For if you use the services of Telescum, you may aswell support prohibition!
It never ceases to amaze me just how many people have no regard for how their own actions facilitate the perpetuation of the 'extortion', and all sorts of other inequitable facets of life.
The exact same thing can be said for so many political manifestations of life as we know it. Too many people just don't care about the bigger picture, nor their fellow human beings. As long as individuals can get the cheapest deal, or more money in their own pockets, or plead guilty, who cares if so many others are being shafted. Pathetic is what that is, and a reflection of the nature of the extent of apathy and indifference is all.
Mrniceguy - Tony is correct. Aussie is in over its ears in terms of corruption. They make NZ seem like a cute puppy in that regard. There have been many high level corruption cases over there in several states and most often the inquiries are shut down because all too often those who are investigating said allegations are in on the stench. It goes right to the top!
Drugs factor in there majorly and as ussual it is that same old war on drugs which has made all that possible. There are many countries which have also fallen victim to this too and become awash in corruption. All because of the USA war on drugs/UN war on people.
Believe it or not...so many of these nanny state policies such as the new efforts to prohibit tobacco have their origins off-shore in places like the UN/WHO. The exact same thing exists with prohibition. Which of the major political parties would ask, 'Why?'

Snap, my last account from telecom a fee of $5.99 to be disconnected.
In response to a telephone marketing call from Compass Communications I took the opportunity to change my land line provider to a NZ owned company.
A spur of the moment decision to take the opportunity to dump on telecom.
I got conned into going Vodafone way , it was three months ago , since then I have paid about six times as much as I understood it would be..not only that if I don't pay on the stuffed up accounts they send me a cut off letter, Don't reply to my urgent emails.. If I wait up to 90 mins on the help line I get all sorts of promises it will get fixed ( five time todate ) then withing 48 hrs get another big and overdue account , if not paid cut off. So I send it off .
I must be about $400 .00 or more overpaid todate .. I just want a broadband and phone service not by the bloody place by installments.
sorry about that , just for the vodafone search engine.. Who knows they might read this and feel so guilty they might offer to repay the overpayments AND HOST the medpot.co.nz site for a couple of years for free as compensation .
