What proportion of the population smokes the good herb? Is this website any statistical indicator?
And, would the general population be surprised at the numbers? |

Hi Moa, I doubt this website is a statistical indicator.
I think most recent SHORE stats put it at around 16% regular users (all ages, I think) though say that could be under-reported, ie. that when questioned in the annual drug survey they may have lied LOL.
Their stats also say at least 52% of people between 15-55 (I think) have tried it at some point, but those figures exclude ages 55+
And that just slightly under 80% of teens have tried it.
Perhaps the general population may be surprised, or say they are. Those stats have been published, but really only when they came out. The mainstream media almost never mention them.
EDIT: after a quick search found this | Quote: |
http://www.ndp.govt.nz/moh.nsf/pagescm/1109/$File/idms-2006-final-report-v2.pdf
The proportion of the New Zealand population aged 13-45 years old who had ever tried cannabis decreased in 2006 compared to 2003 (41.5% versus 51.3%, p<0.0001).
The proportion of people who had used cannabis in the previous 12 months also decreased in 2006 compared to 2003 (17.0% versus 19.7%, p=0.0354).
There has previously been no statistically significant change in the last year use of cannabis among the New Zealand population going back to 2001 (see Wilkins et al., 2005a). |
So they say among that age group the number ever used pot has fallen from 52% to 41%. I imagine that could be for several reasons, eg. perhaps lowered drinking age, plonk in supermarkets . . . I was a wee bit more accurate with the current users 17%
I know there is also a fairly extensive questionnaire done via telephone survey by some Auckland outfit, I was a randomly questioned person a couple of years ago. The SHORE website refers briefly to 'national household drug survey data' http://www.shore.ac.nz/projects/idms_study.htm but I've been unable to find anything else online via a quick google.

| Oh yes to be 55+ and excluded from statistics, to grow and smoke your own and be ignored by the local constabulary is a good thing for senior citizens, long may it last. |

The age cutoff is 45 not 55, I'm excluded too

Wow seeing most plants yeild a decent number of ounces that must be a staggering amount of people those plants were intended to supply _________________ Drink! Sex! Cigarettes!

| Yep you might be right, though I don't think the poolice differentiate between seedlings or 2m plants. They certainly don't when you get to court. |
