PostATTENTION: READ THE LETTERS    Posted: Mon Apr 04, 2005 10:10 am Reply with quote

Hi guys
I was thinking if it was a good idea to start a "Published Letters to the editor" forum? Let me know

Since I got busted last year I have been writing letters every time I see cannabis related articals in my local paper. I'm going to post them on this site and hopfully will encourage others to do the same, if you have written to a paper and it was published please add it to this forum.
The letter would have to be accompanied with your name (eeck) name of paper and date printed.

I try to supply references to the editor with my letters I will do so here as well.
You are free to take the information from my letters and write your own.

Good-o, Steve-oh!

NORML needs volunteers to harvest news, research and letters to the editor. There's a few who search online and post them to MAP. However there's a heap of stuff in the papers that doesn't get online, like the letters to the editor.

If people could scan or transcibe these pieces to the newsgroup or to MAP, it would be great.

Julian Crawford wrote a letter after his protest @ the cathredral steps Nelson.

CANNABIS
Sir, New Zealand has the highest use and arrest rates for cannabis in the world. Given that cannabis has been shown to be non-addictive, this indicates that many benefits fron their use.
Everyone has cannabinoid receptors in their brain and cannabinoid networks throughout the body, yet "Experts" criticise users without understanding the science. In reality, cannabis prohibition equals prohibition of part of our own brains!
The continual use of the word "dope" (a generic term for all drugs) is misleading. There is nothing dopey about cannabis; infact, I, like many others, such as astronomer Carl Sagan, use it for intellectual stimulation. My guess is that if the Nelson Mail got rid of it's pot-smoking journalists, there would be no paper tomorrow.
Cannabis is a powerful medicine, and people are dying because of prohibition. That is why we are coming out of the closet and smoking in public, despite aggressive police with a "guilty untill proven innocent" approach.
Emeritus Professor Lester Grinspoon of Harvard Medical School began studying cannabis in an attempt to define it's dangers but soon admitted he had been brain "washed....If (illicit drugs) don't always make the user behave irrationally, they certainly cause many non-users to behave that way".

THE MERITS OF CANNABIS
Sir, Julian Crawford's argument (mailbox, January 19) that there is nothing dopey about cannabis and that cannabis is used for intellectual stimulation cannot be used in broad sweeping statements to justify making this class C drug legal.
professor Grinspoon of Harvard Medical School may think he had been brainwashed and now believes non-users behave irrationally. If only the results of a 15 year-old boy coming home "stoned" and behaing in a very "dopey" way, were all we had to deal with, you could be forgiven for thinking "what are we worrying about?"
It's the next phase that isn't pretty - watching and having to deal with the withdrawal from being "stoned". It's very hard to relate to someone so depressed and miserable that they contemplate suicide, and I, a non-user, am happy not to be in that space. The withdrawal process is completed by the return of a happy-go lucky 15-year-old boy (with all the usual teenage problems).
I am not dismissing the merits of cannabis use for medical conditions which modern medicines don't seem to assist, but cannabis use doesn't benefit everyone. As to wheather it is addictive or not, it certainly isn't for the use of the many.
