OUSA Student General Meeting (25/9) Posted: Thu Sep 25, 2008 3:02 pm |

Hey guys,
Just came from the aforementioned meeting. Results were as expected - mixed. All of the motions put forward by Abe Gray and David Carey were rejected. There were however some good constructive points put forward by one character (didn't catch his name).
OUSA still "condones public smoking of cannabis on University grounds" as a motion to oppose this was denied.
However, apparently alcohol isn't as bad as cannabis (load of bullshit, as we all know) although on the initial vote and the recount the numbers were very close.
Despite the following motion being rescinded (put forward to be rescinded by Adam Dodds):
| Quote: | | 25/07 THAT OUSA recognise and publicise the knowledge that alcohol use is more harmful than cannabis use. |
This motion did not pass (from the same guy):
| Quote: | | THAT OUSA believes and promotes the knowledge that excessive alcohol and non-medicinal cannabis use is more harmful than abstaining. |
However the mover (Adam Dodds) was contradicting himself in his two motions above. The main point to rescind the 25/07 motion was due to the factual nature of the point. It was agreed that it is not the job of the OUSA to report medical information. It is clear that the second motion Dodds proposed is in clear contradiction of the agreed stance.
Overall it's good that cannabis use on campus will be tolerated.
Feel free to add any info below or make clear any discrepancies if you were present at the meeting and I will add to this post. Thanks. |

What would also be of interest is knowing the politics of those attempting to shut down CLR on campus..
Maybe even Departments they may be associated with and what the current grant status is for those Depts .

That's a very good point.
I think next time there is a meeting relating to cannabis in Dunedin we need to organise some facts and formulate a slightly stronger argument.
I'm not a uni student so I couldn't go up and voice my own opinion. |

Thanks for that. Someone else posted the other day about the impeding meeting:

Today in my lecture some student I think from the OUSA spoke before the lecture began and tried to encourage the students in my lecture to attend the next OUSA meeting and oppose the proposed Cannabis Smoking Balcony. Going on about how he doesn't want the OUSA turn into a lobby and how it would damage the University's reputation etc. Anyway just letting everyone know. |

The facts that I presented were mocked and laughed at, it was clear that there were not many people at that meeting who were interested at all. Their minds were already made up.
And FYI: We wanted an area for smokers, not specifically cannabis smokers.
It's simply amazing how many childish morons manage to find their way into university. |

| Yes I recognise that, the fact that not many intellectuals were there is represented by 25/07 being rescinded. |

Yeah it was quite an amazing meeting really. Even though we didn't progress new motions (predictably) the maintaining of historical motions was a major victory and gives us the Green light to continue 4-20 in the face of unprecidented attack.
This was one of the biggest SGM in the last 5 years and the crowd of over 300 maintained attendence for 2 hours almost solely to discuss cannabis. It was clear that there was a highly organised anti-marijuana brigade and it looked like the crowd would be very hostile to anything NORML.
But quite ironically after defeating the initial NORML motions, the crowd started feeling sorry for us, seeing that a raft of personal attack directed at Otago Norml prez Abe Gray was kicking Norml while we are down. OUSA President also said if the students removed OUSA's mandate to support cannabis smoking as an act of protest, then 4-20 would be over and the thin blue would be all over us like a rash. Thankfully the crowd was just swayed in our favour by the closet of margins.
This is the greatest possible confirmation yet that our ongoing protests have the backing of the student body. As we all know, smoking cannabis publically is at the forefront of the CLR movement and does the most to undermine prohibition. Given that Dunedin is the only place maintaining 4-20s now this could have dealt a death blow to norml's highest form of activism. Thank You to all our supporters.
One thing that was apparent was the courage required to speak in front of such a large and hostile crowd. Drefetr, Warwick and others did a great job standing up to the onslaught.
420 For Victory, a short documentary about Otago Norml activities over tha past year, will screen in the upcoming Mothra film festival here in Dunedin. _________________ Tick the Leaf - www.alcp.org.nz
