kids with cannabis Posted: Wed Jul 12, 2006 5:45 pm |

I was rather appalled by an article in todays Otago daily time about a couple of very young kids smoking pot at a dunedin school.
I found a webpage for the same story on on nzcity's site, this is what it said:
| Quote: | Dunedin police are investigating after two young children smoking cannabis almost set fire to Halfway Bush School.
The nine and 11-year-olds ducked away from where they were supposed to be yesterday to smoke the cannabis and ended up setting fire to a tree at the school.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken says it is disturbing that children so young were able to obtain drugs.
She says police know who the children are and have spoken to them and to their parents, to try to work out where the cannabis came from.
Senior Sergeant Aitken says fortunately a local boy saw the smoke coming from the school and called 111 on his cellphone.
He says that probably saved the school quite a lot of damage.

This I think is rather unfortunate. I know how kids of this age can be as far as being curious goes but it would have been better for all involved if the owner of the stash had done a better job of hiding it so said kids didn't find it or had been a bit more discrete in using it so that the kids curiosity wouldn't have been aroused as to what sort of effect it has. |

If there were to be no prohibition I would be asking for secure lockup facilities to be used similar in fashion to gun cupboards. Children wouldn't have access and it would act as a deterant to burglars. _________________ A pain free day the marijuana way.

its rather sickening to find kids at that age to be smoking pot.
If prohibiton was lifted many of these problems would never have occured because regulation would be controlled.
Also, the use of cannabis is like the use of any other recreational substance. When consumed in a suitable enviroment in a non-abusive manner it is harmless. |

just what i was going to say
when i was about 11, we were stealing cigarettes and matches off the adults and smoking in a pine forrest.
it subsequently burnt the whole forest down and a few fire engines came and had a bit of a talk to us about the seriousness of what we'd done |

Thats pretty bad SMR. When i was a small boy i had a thing about matches for a while. But not for long after i was caught playing with them once, it was a real shock. Had the devil of a time getting them in the first place, mum was onto it
A few months later there was a fire in the neighbourhood and she took me down for a look aftrwards when the fire trucks left. We lived close enough to it to hear the roar and see the smoke and flames. I can still remember the foul smell, and the reality of what fire can do to a house.
Give me pot anyday |

I think 11 is a bit young! Posted: Mon Apr 21, 2008 1:30 pm |

I never started smoking till I was 16...I think 11 is a little too young to be doing that, I once freaked out when I saw an 8 year old picking up cigarette butts from the playground and smoking them. I also think its silly to smoke at school...weed is for fun, it shouldn't be used in a place where you should be focusing on academics. _________________ Our lives are full of ethical dilemmas... |

I think I'm with you on that, though am dead against police involvement as well as consequences that involve corrections departments |

Hi All,
have just joined the forums here and theres a load of interesting stuff on this site. congrats on all your good work
recent research seems to suggest that effects of smoking cannbis on adolescents are quite horrific.
personally I didn't start smoking until I'd finished school, and was at uni. was a far better alternative to drinking as I hate hangovers and there is a family history of alcoholism.
However I do enjoy a tasty J and a nice glass of quality wine at the end of a long day. |

Mhmm, 11 is a little young. I personally, who grew up a bit to fast for my own good had my first high of marijuana when I was 13. Sometimes its merley a case of having older friends, sometimes it's a case of the 'rents smoking and the kids getting curious. As silly as it seems for me to say, 11 is far to young, it worries me a little that 11 year olds would be smoking herb, wouldn't it be distressing for them? I mean, god I remember my first cigarette and going "hey woah man what?" from the nicotine rush. But at 11, you've never been drunk, you've never done any of the naughty things us big kids get up to, so, I imagine the high would be totally crazy for them ( as good as it is) because they've never experienced such things.
Also, maybe I was just a bit slow on it, but for the life of me I could not work a match box at 11...the buggers are getting smarter and smarter. bahaha
lol...if you're going to have a "oh fuck" moment, at least make it memorable, they sure did!... and so did SMR by the sounds of it |

The only thing we can do right now is vote for ALCP, get cannabis legalised, then it can be regulated and age controlled, then children won't be given the opportunity to start. _________________ A pain free day the marijuana way.
