I can see why they didn't print it, it made too much sense
I read an obituary in yesterday's Press for Richard King, a v good book designer, one of old Rosie's uni flatmates.
She was quoted saying he was 'a product of the sixties, he enjoyed all that life had to offer"
Maybe we need to write a provocative LTE re Rosemary, try not to make it too sensible, just make one point. |

In her latest diatribe against cannabis and its users, Rosemary McLeod said that she does not support legalising cannabis because she thinks it would create more problems than it would solve (March 6). I find that very hard to believe because legalising cannabis would in fact solve a great many problems.
Legalisation would free up the Police, court and prison resources wasted persecuting cannabis uses to tackle real crime. It would remove a source of revenue from organised criminals and provide a source of taxation for the Government. It would allow for the regulation of cannabis use eg making it R18. It would free many otherwise law abiding citizens from being stigmatised as criminals. It would enable medical marijuana users to concentrate on getting well. Legalisation would also put an end to the needless murder of people like Mr Stanlake due to the unjustified prohibition of a very useful plant. |
Was a bit disappointed that The Press decided not to publish the above letter that I sent them (on 10/3/08 ) because I felt it was a really good one. |
They printed it today, finally |

Yay, only change is they deleted 'eg making it R18. It ' and inserted 'and' |

Thanks for that Harry.
Couldn't quite believe that they finally printed it so I went and tracked down a copy of The Press. Funny thing is that I was in the library today checking the newspapers and I thought "Shall I check The Press?", to which I replied "Nah, they won't have published it!" I've actually had "Write to Ed of The Press re: rejected LTE" on my to-do list for the past week but hadn't done anything yet. So to find out that it finally got published 16 days after I submitted it is quite mystifying. While I'm very happy to see it in print (good title too, "Legalise cannabis"), I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that it seems to have remained in The Press' system for more than a fortnight.
Anyway, it underlines my belief that the best approach to letter-writing is to just write the LTE and then let the Editor decide what to do with it. It's their job after all.

They also cut out "I find that very hard to believe because...." from the 2nd sentence but that's OK.
Here it is as it appeared in The Press:
Legalise cannabis

2nd Rosemary McLoud LTE in the Press Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2008 7:52 pm |

Earlier today I spotted this letter in yesterday's Press in the "In a few words" section:
| Quote: | | I refer to Rosemary McLeod's column, "Death of friends" (March 13). So true. So genuinely sincere. And as well, such good journalism. Relates to many of us who could not put the thoughts into words. Thank you, Rosemary McLeod. |
Genuinely sincere? Good journalism? Rosemary McLeod? I just can't read that letter without thinking that they must be taking the piss. |

I wrote to Nic some time ago pointing out how his situation.. being unable to defend himself against the huge clobbering machines because of legal costs , using examples of medpot users who have suffered the same fate..
Suggested he feels as helpless as we do..
He has yet to reply.

I'm sorry nightshade I don't know. I did see potshots' letter, but I don't buy The Press every day.
Am so busy these days trying to juggle everything if I bought it every day a lot less would be done. Can't even make time these days to get to the library to check the backissues.
I can tell you it wasn't printed on Tues, Wed or Sat though. |
