No worries Rowan icon_cool.gif .

Regarding the under 18 disclaimer. How about something like this:

Feel free to post But please do not use this site to hook-up.
Feel free to learn about cannabis and the lies your elders have told you about one of the most fantastic, versatile plant on this ball we live on.

Consensus says that its not until you reach 18 has your brain (frontal lobe) finished its major development. Cannabis WILL slow that process down (And in to-days environment one needs no hindrance in their development)

Remember if you do get into a position where you try cannabis (And remember we do NOT advocate people under 18 using cannabis) If you do experience some adverse effect and you feel uncomfortable, realise that feeling will go away within a couple of hours.

Do not have any more. Because a small percent of cannabis users will experience adverse effects and it is important for these individuals to realise that maybe cannabis is not for them.

Also it is imperative NEVER to mix tobacco with cannabis, as tobacco kills 4500 New Zealanders each year, as well as being highly addictive. Smoking is a form of slavery. So don't mix your drugs.

NEVER get behind the wheel of a vehicle, or into a car when the driver has been mixing cannabis with alcohol, this combination (especially alcohol) this mixture is deadly, your response time becomes 'shit' and the odds are you'll end up seeing the death of a friend or yourself icon_evil.gif

steveoh,
Good on you for attempting to solve the "U18" problem.
Unfortunately, the second statement above seems to contradict the first. Does cannabis really affect the brains development for U18s or is it merely yet another "cannabis myth" (ie one of "the lies your elders have told you")? Consensus of who? (If something has to be decided by consensus can it be considered a fact?)
Having looked after a couple of teenagers myself, I can say categorically that even siblings can vary greatly in their development. Some adolescents are mature beyond their years, others seem very immature. Some adolescents could try cannabis without any problems at 15 while others are probably still not mature enough at 18-years-old. Therefore blanket statements about adolescent cannabis use are probably as accurate, and useful, as blanket statements about adult cannabis use - not very.

What is the purpose of the "U18 disclaimer"? To me it appears to be simply symbolic, a bit like making a stand against cannabis by prohibiting its use ie very difficult to police.
Does the disclaimer work? Are prohibitionists likely to read it and think "Hmm, I was wrong, NORML are responsible after all" or will they cynically think "NORML are only saying that to appear responsible"? And any adolescent prepared to break the law is unlikely to be deterred by NORML's disclaimer.
I can appreciate that the "Hook-up" forum is a problem with U18s using the website but which crime would be considered the worst by most people: An U18 trying to score or someone selling cannabis to an U18? If it's the latter, then having the "Hook-up" forum is probably a worse image for the NORML website than the presence of U18s who are at least protected by some anonymity.

IMO having such a strict policy against U18s is a bit of a lost opportunity. Who else is catering for U18s who are also cannabis users? If they can't get information/help/advice from NORML then where do they get it? DARE? LIFE Ed Trust? Why not throw the problem back in the prohibitionists face and say "These cannabis-using kids are the victims of your laws and attitudes. Who else is looking after them? Are we responsible for them becoming cannabis users? Where are the parents? How come they don't know what their kids are doing?" Etc etc.

Anyway, just a few thoughts on a topic that seems to need discussion to start off the day. Which is very beautiful so I better go and get some things done.

The way it's going, under 18s will think NORML doesn't like them. I agree with potshots - where else can they go for honest factual cannabis information? The big shiny Life Education caravan?

Hey lay off MNG,

He does a heck of a lot of IT technical stuff behind the scenes as well searching resources .

He is trying to moderate a forum that is very diverse .
NORML has rules one is to discourage u18 use,

and as well have the forum , which is read by a large range of people including the media and politicians ,

He has the unenviable task of trying to have it give of CLR the best possible face.

Lets help him .

Tony

If you read NORML's policies, it actually doesn't say this. (When I last looked, anyway)

I will "lay off MNG" when he starts to listen to reason, instead of basing his entire perception of my person on the fact that I haven't been alive for as long as he has.

Not to mean to sound arrogant, but I think I'm a pretty good example of the fact that cannabis does NOT have adverse effects on people under the age of eighteen, as I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person and I have not noticed a decline in my intellect as a result of smoking. (Aside from not remembering too much when I'm real stoned, but hey.) A whole bunch of the users on this forum began smoking before they were eighteen anyway, and yet they'll harp on about how dreadful it is that I should come to a forum not only looking for advice on sensible cannabis use, but to try to give some aswell. (Well, before my posts were deleted anyway.)

Just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

I consider NORMLS Principles of Responsible Marijuana Use.

"ADULTS only , Cannabis consumption is for adults only. It is irresponsible to provide cannabis under 18."

Does sort of imply NORML discourages U18 use..

Rowan at time you actually write some good stuff , if you really want to help the cause , try sticking to constructive stuff.

MNG, you -TOLD- me not to post. You can't tell someone "Hey, don't ever fucking come to my house!" and then complain that they never visit.

And also, it is my opinion that having a forum that essentially preaches to the converted is doing about as much for law reform as Steveoh is doing for the Labour party ..

But the secret uname you were using briefly doesn't count huh....

Tell me Rowan, how many letter to parliament have you written?
Or are you sitting round the uni 4:20 preaching to those already converted....

This site does not only contain the already converted, as of late there has been alot of visits from people who don;t use cannabis asking questions, political advisors and doctors also frequent this site.
Therefore the factual news reports ect that we all provide gives joe public web surfer information that is fact, not full of bs that govts love to pump out.

This information also becomes useful for those who wish to write letters either to the press or to parliament, or even to be used in court cases.

If you still think this is all bullshit and it's not the way you would do it then I suggest you shut up, go do your smoke ups with the already converted and stop bugging us!

icon_razz.gif Here's an idea: Next J-day we should build these huge (2 metres) joints (soft, but firm) one slippery pole where people can sit-on, and you two guys can go for it icon_razz.gif Being an election year I would rather see both you guys put all that energy into convincing people to VOTE ALCP or to get some insurance the the "ALREADY CONVERTED" get off the lounge/computer chairs and go down to their nearest voting centre, and VOTE icon_wink.gif
