Upcoming concerts in Auckland Posted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 12:34 pm
It's turning out to be a good last half year for 2007's concerts.
Muse are playing a show here on the 23rd November at Trust's Stadium (no longer Vector Arena apparently). They also play a show in Christchurch. Tickets are meant to go on presale tomorrow, but no sites have listed them yet.
Battles are playing a gig at the Kings Arms next month (Friday 21th September). Tickets on sale at Real Groovy for 49 bucks. Interesting band that I hadn't heard of until I read about them touring here (along with a description of the band that encouraged me to check them out).
"Battles is known as a US math rock band. Following a string of EPs, the band released their debut LP on the Warp Records label in May 2007. The group's lineup is composed of well-known musicians, including ex-Helmet(also currently in Tomahawk) drummer John Stanier, ex-Don Caballero, ex-Storm & Stress guitarist Ian Williams, ex-Lynx guitarist Dave Konopka, and Tyondai Braxton (son of Avantgarde Jazz musician Anthony Braxton) who also plays guitar and keyboard and creates live voice samples.
Their newest album Mirrored, recorded by Keith Souza at Machines With Magnets, was released on 14 May 2007. The first single from the album, "Atlas," was released on 21 February 2007 as streaming audio, and the accompanying streaming video was released on 28 February 2007.
Recently the single "Atlas" was voted "best single of the week" by NME magazine,[1] and received a glowing review in the UK's Clash Magazine where comparisons were made to Glitter Beat.
Battles scored their first UK cover feature in May 2007, talking to Plan B Magzine about the making of Mirrored."
Also next month is Napalm Death (opening acts are Malevolence, Graymalkin and Sticky Filth) on Wednesday 12th September. Yes, it's a weekday, but harden up. May be the last chance to see the legendary grind band so make an effort if you're into that kind of thing. Tickets on sale at Real Groovy and Ticketek.
Found out today that The Black Dahlia Murder AND Cephalic Carnage are playing a show here at the Kings Arms on Friday the 9th November. Opening bands are Antagonist, Ulcerate and Akaname. Tickets are expected to go on sale on the 27th August at Ticketek and Real Groovy. Definitely going to be a killer gig. Below is some info on the 2 headlining bands if you're unfamiliar with them.
"The Black Dahlia Murder immediately established themselves at the forefront of the then-burgeoning U.S. metal scene when they released their full-length Metal Blade debut Unhallowed in June 2003. The release of that critically lauded album, however, was only the beginning of an epic journey that would find this Detroit, Michigan, quintet dealing with personnel issues (founding member drummer Cory Grady was replaced by Zach Gibson) and a nonstop touring itinerary that kept them on the road for nearly two years playing with bands as diverse as The Red Chord, Arch Enemy, Napalm Death and Terror. But those experiences ultimately had a profound effect on their latest Metal Blade release, Miasma. "The road has been what really made Miasma what it is," vocalist Trevor Strnad confesses. "Much of the content here is a direct result of our experience in the band."
It is no surprise, then, that Miasma reflects the insanity of life on the road for five guys, barely over the legal drinking age, who were playing an endless string of shows across North America and Europe. "It's quite a bit more personal lyrically, ranging from anthems of cheap sex and drug use to more classic Black Dahlia Murder horror style," says Strnad. "I've tried to reinvent BDM lyrically here. It's still dark. It's still really evil shit."
Strnad's growth as a lyricist is just one of the ways the band expanded its sound on Miasma. Guitarist Brian Eschbach contributed more to the writing process while his counterpart John Kempainen wrote and played solos for every track. As a result, The Black Dahlia Murder--rounded out by bassist Dave Lock--have created an album that reflects the bonds cemented by the band's two-year odyssey. Recorded and co-produced with the band by Scarlet drummer Andreas Magnusson at Planet Red Studio in Richmond, Virginia, Miasma is a deadly reinvention of The Black Dahlia Murder's nefariously nasty melodic death metal sound. It is a sound that Kempainen simply describes as "more pissed off." Strnad sees other improvements, as well, however. "The new songs are much heavier than anything on Unhallowed," he declares. "We were making a conscious effort to challenge ourselves as players and give each song an identity of its own. And the addition of Zach has enabled us as a unit to write more complex and interesting arrangements."
Miasma is just the latest chapter in the ever-twisted saga of The Black Dahlia Murder. Like the long-unsolved murder of a young Hollywood starlet that the band took its name from, The Black Dahlia Murder's appeal is visceral and dark, a terror-filled exploration of extreme sounds and vicious brutality. And it is a step closer to the apex the band is still aiming its sights for. "I feel that we are yet to reach our prime," says Strnad, "but Miasma is many steps closer to where we want to be. We have a better band in 2005 and now a record to show for it."
Their new album, Nocturnal, is slated for release September 7th, 2007."
"Cephalic Carnage is a musical group formed in Denver, Colorado in 1992. Cephalic Carnage coined their own term for their music, Rocky Mountain HydroGrind. They blend jazz, experimental music, death metal, doom metal, sludge and grindcore into their own unique sound. They have developed a reputation as a very intense live band and tour regularly throughout the United States and Europe. Their first European show took place in Germany in summer of 2003 and their first European tour followed in October of 2003 at the Fuck the Commerce festival. They are currently signed to Relapse Records and have released four albums on Relapse to date. They have also released one album on another label for a total of five albums. They are currently on the US Summer Slaughter tour."

Indeed, I was at Cannibal Corpse. Never seen the 420 bar so full of people. You're never too old to go to a metal gig! I'll be doing this shit until I'm on my death bed.
The Amenta is on October 13th, a Saturday night. Wish I could go, but have already arranged to go camping for a mate's 25th birthday. _________________ "There are no good and bad drugs, only good and bad relationships with drugs"

If you dig The Black Dahlia Murder and Cephalic Carnage, then come check out this veritable insane asylum of a gig! Tickets on-sale now at Real Groovy, Cosmic Corner and Ticketek nationwide.
The free smoking of cannabis will be wholeheartedly encouraged at this show.
I already have my ticket to Cepahlic Carnage/Black Dahlia/5 Star Prison Cell etc.
Will be turning up early for the free BBQ and look forward to partaking in the herb (hopefully with Cephalic Carnage).
Btw, eternal thanks to RW Entertainment for making 2007 such an insane year for metal gigs. Keep them coming!
Other gigs later this year includes Behemoth in December and Amon Amarth next year.
Bivouac, I'd rather castrate myself than go to Justin Timberlake! Besides, I'm going to Muse on the same night.
No offence taken; I don't like Auckland city much either. I only go into town to attend decent gigs or buy some CDs at Real Groovy. Mostly an "in and out" exercise.
If you get bored, walk up to Albert Park. _________________ "There are no good and bad drugs, only good and bad relationships with drugs"
It was a damn fine night. Free feed and 7 good bands. Cephalic Carnage blew me away and it was good to see Five Star Prison Cell again (saw them in Oz at Overcranked festival and didn't know who they were). Singer is ex-singer from Frankenbok.
Apparently Immortal and Kataklysm are playing next year around March. _________________ "There are no good and bad drugs, only good and bad relationships with drugs"
Yeah they are, will be a nutty few days. MIGHTY RAVENDARK!!!!!!
Oh so that singer is ex-Frankenbok? That explains why he looked familiar and why he kept taking the piss outta them on stage. Those guys were easily one of the best bands ive seen live, tight, fucking hilarious performance. Kudos to them, and the bassist was a good cunt to get wasted with.
