sorry to jump in,
i made an account on norml just so i could reply to the whole 18+ J'day idea. I'm sixteen and have smoked marijuana since i was fourteen. I've kept going to school and maintain decent grades. It depends on a person's maturity when it comes to smoking weed.
If anything - smoking marijuana while i was younger opened up my ideas to a lot of things. It made me who i am, even though i've decreased how much i smoke.
Getting the youth involved in this is a good thing, we're the future lawmakers and breakers. Getting the under 18's involved is good - the more people at jday, the bigger message it sends.
people will be cutting out a big portion of the marijuana community by banning under 18's.
I went last year and it changed my mind.

I give up on the whole under 18 thing. It will never be solved by prohibition and you just gotta do what you gotta do.
Cant stop them drinking piss, driving a car, cant stop them doing anything they are going to do anyway.
So just do it and if theres any consequences, its their issue.

Hey Kat_x, good call. Most people get exposed to cannabis before they turn 18. The law reform movement focuses on the age of 18 because it is scientifically proven that the adolescent brain has finished the majority of it's frontal-lobe development. Also our society has this illusional belief that we have to protect "the little children" when in reality, we as a society do fuck-all to protect them, we treat young people like mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed bullshit).
It is proven that cannabis has a lethargic effect on most adolescent males, which seems to disappear once they reach adulthood (studies have shown no ill effects on the brain once becoming an adult).
At the moment the majority of cannabis studies are instigated on the hope that they (the man) can find harmful effects of cannabis use. To-date this has failed, and we have found things like THC kills tumours, helps brain cell reform, and helps stop smokers from getting cancers from tobacco .
Kat_x what would be a great thing for you and your friends to do, would be to convince as many people as you can who are turning 18 before September 2008 to enrol (piss-easy), and then on election day (polling stations will be open all day), GIVE ALCP YOURE VOTE (unfortunately voting greens will not do nothing to legalise cannabis) This will ensure that in the future you or your friends wont end up with a LIFE HANDICAP; unable to travel to the USA and other countries, be closed out of some careers, or just be hassled by the cops all the time.

It depends on whether they are party votes or electorate votes. Party votes are really what count in the big picture to get into parliament.
But one thing I've noticed is that electorate candidates are key to representing the issue in order to prompt people to even think about giving their vote to ALCP. If a candidate has some supporters to actively help at election time, experience has shown that almost everywhere they get stuff into people's mailboxes it noticeably increases the vote. Not many people volunteer to stand though
Hopefully I'll be able to attend. Jumping in with the under 18+, I'm 17 and will be turning 18 in a few more months however I believe I am mature enough to be participating in J-Day. It'll be my first J-Day too, therefore im quite excited and such.
If anything, marijuana has helped me alot. I was struggling with school last year. After starting to smoke recreationally this year, I've been able to cope with stress easier and now I'm fully motivated in school. My grades have also increased significantly.
I'll be sure to continue to support legalisation of cannabis and will be voting ALCP once I hit the magical number.

but can you see where we're coming from? if the boys in blue do rain on our parade they can see that we've only aloud 18+, which shows we've tried to govern ourselves.... totally for weed to be 18 and over...
As Steveoh points out there is sufficient evidence to cause concern about under 18 cannabis use . CB1 and CB2 receptor development may well be effected to ( trust me this is not a good thing) .
But frankly I think when we find more out about it , or what we may know is made public , it may be in moderation and managed correctly prove to be a valuable medication for many of them.
I hear more and more of late about cannabis and ADHD/ADD , cannabis and anxiety/stress and one must wonder ..
But in saying that until we can overcome the current anti attitudes the chances of open and honest research will not be possible. What understanding we have from the greater public does not yet stem to underage smoking so any under 18 who really want to help the cause will respect this..
Don't make the life of those trying to get the herb accepted any more difficult than the opposition already make it..
