Mr Anderton,
I'm writing to you in hopes of getting through to you on the medicinal cannabis issue. As you will no doubt know, the MOD amendment act has its first reading soon, and needs support to make it through so that it can be discussed in greater detail.
I have contacted you previously, and I do believe I was given some generic response, which roughly equates to a slap in the face given the effort I put into it.
I'm not going to bother to point out the facts to you, everyone else does and you blindly ignore them -- let's talk about votes. When push comes to shove it's all you really care about. Without votes, how could you go on ruling our lives?
Votes are what you get when someone over the age of 17 is happy with you, no? Consider this: every election, old people die and young people come of voting age. Young people who... how do I put this... may be more open minded towards cannabis issues than you power hungry prohibitionists. Young people who are -not- happy with your policies at all.
I for instance, will be of age before next election, and you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be voting for the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party. Take a moment to consider, if you will, how many people are also in my position, and how many medical users are fed up with the current state of things. Please note that statistics show up to 50% of teens have at some point used cannabis, and a large amount continue to do so. If the real figure is anywhere near that, then once that group of people come of age, I predict there'll be a huge boom of voting power in cannabis inclined parties' favour. It's not rocket science. ALCP might even get a seat in the next election with the way you prohibitionists are handling the situation. Wouldn't that be great?
Don't you think it'd be wise to get in on the action, so to speak? Don't be the bad guy; be the good guy. The guy who rises to the occasion in the time of need. The guy who gets people medicine that works for them. Support the bill, at least allow it to get through its first reading, so that the issues like consistency, potency and safety can be stamped out.
You say that you'll support medicinal cannabis if those things are sorted, yet currently won't allow things to get that far. By supporting this bill, you're really not doing anything other than pushing the issue to a stage where these things can be discussed in a political context, in accordance with your wishes on the subject.
Surely I'm not the only one who can see the absurdity here. It's like saying "I could stand here and leave the sandwhich out of reach, or I could walk one step forward, grab and devour the sandwhich. Nope. I think I'll stay put so I can use the sandwhich being too far away as an excuse to complain about being hungry." Take that step. I'm sure you know in some fibre of your being that it's the right thing to do.
There's no doubt in my mind that you'll glance over this e-mail, and hundreds of others, then drive home in your fancy car which my taxes payed for, maybe even have a glass of some harmful alcoholic beverage after your hard day at work, and probably sleep just fine. But if I can instill just a seed of doubt in your mind, I'll be happy. If I can prompt you to reconsider the changing times, and that your prohibitionist beliefs are outdated, I'll be happy. If I can prompt you to realize that eventually we'll have our way, with or without you, I'll be happy.
Please know that this is not meant to be threatening in any way at all. I just want you to know my feelings on the issue, and given your previous blatant disregard, I was left no other option than to have at it and hope for some sort of miniscule result.
If 25% of the population use cannabis as reported by statistics, and everyone of those 25% voted for ALCP, now wouldn't that put the big fish in a muddle.... _________________ A pain free day the marijuana way.

fantastic letter bubblebobble. way cool.
The next election is in the hands of people like you, the next generation.
If there could be a grass roots movement to get the newly eligible voters, who have no real allegiance to any party, to vote for ALCP (party vote) then we can show these 'dicks' that we can use the democratic system to achieve our goals.
refuse to be a second rate citizen.
