***Harvesting: Is the act of cutting the plant down. This must be done at the correct time to obtain the most desirable product. Plants harvested before the proper time, may look great, but can produce next to nothing in the buzz department (schwag). There are a few ways to get a general idea of when your plant is ready to harvest. The best way to tell if your plant is ripe or not, is to get a 10x, 20x, or 30x jewelers magnifying loupe. By looking at the resin glands (trichomes), one can tell the perfect time to harvest. A magnified trichome looks similar to a mushroom. If one were to watch as the trichomes form, they would notice a small stalk start, and then the head of the trichome begins to swell. While the trichomes are growing, it will be clear. Once the trichome has reached maturity, the head has stopped swelling. At this time, a change in trichome colour is seen. They will go from clear to a milky white or opaque colour, some may even turn amber (usually later in flowering). When the trichomes go from clear to opaque, this means the trichomes have reached their peak, and are starting to degrade. Very mature trichomes may turn amber as well. It is best to check top and bottom of the plant. Not all of the plant will mature at the same time. Some plants the tops will be mature first, others the bottom first. The mature tops can be pruned off, and the light lowered, so the rest of the plant can mature. _________________ God was my copilot but we crashed in the mountains and I had to eat him |

You shouldn't pick the fan leaves off unless they are shading a bud. The leaves act as factories producing the materials the plant needs for growth. Fewer leaves means slower growth. And during flowering you want all the growth you can get.
They also act as storage for nutrients, if you soil runs out of nitrogen, the plant will start drawing nutrients from the lower leaves first causing them to go yellow so it can continue to grow up top, or in your case finish flowering.
NE's put some good advice on when to harvest, but before you do, read some infomation on curing your bud, it can make all the difference between average smoke and some dam fine smoke... Letting it dry too quickly will lower its quality. |
