Five face expulsion after drug tip-off
20 September 2005

By STEVE EDWARDS

Five Te Aroha College students face possible expulsion from the school after being found smoking cannabis last week.

Following a tip-off from the public, principal Dave Douglas caught three girls and two boys ? all bar one aged under 16 ? in school uniform at Boyd Park.

The five will appear before the college board of trustees either today or tomorrow. Options include "permanent exclusion", or suspension after which they would be required to undergo drug counselling and provide a clear urine test before re-entering the school, and be subject to future random testing. They have also been referred to the police youth aid section. Parents/caregivers have all been informed.

Mr Douglas said he found the five after school on Thursday. The alleged drug supplier, who Mr Douglas believes to be a recent college pupil, left the scene and has not been located.

Police youth aid officer Senior Constable Wayne Aberhart has been requested to attend the board hearings.

Mr Douglas said the board will be wanting feedback from the police regarding apprehension of the alleged drug supplier. "We are looking for some follow-up," he said, offering his appreciation of the community's support in reporting the matter.

If the alleged supplier remains at large, Mr Douglas said he will seek to take out a court order against this person being near the college grounds.

He still believes students with "good habits" will prevail to minimise the influence of the "creeps" that seek to make a tax-free dollar at the expense of the susceptible.

Speaking to the Piako Post on Friday, Mr Douglas said he planned to comment on the issue at Monday's assembly.

"The good has to drive out the bad," he said. Both Te Aroha and Morrinsville colleges have in recent weeks issued strong anti-drug messages (Piako Post September 7).

Two small groups of Morrinsville College students, aged 13 and 14, were caught using cannabis in separate incidents late last term and at the beginning of this term.

I read most of the post before hundreds of thoughts entered my head.

Peoples personal lives, and what they do in their own time, is completely up to them isnt it? They shouldn't have the authority to randomly test students. I feel the same way about random drug tests at work.

Everything just left my head as fast as it enetered, but reading stuff like that pisses me off. straighties piss me off

I agree, but they shouldn't have been in uniform. That's a bad reflection on the school, which is why they care so much.

But drug testing at work is a big issue for me. They don't alcohol test at work because you shouldn't be coming to work drunk. Same for drugs. Who cares what people do on their own time, it doesn't make them less of a person!

what happens if some child has gone to a party and theres just pot smoke around , and if he dosnt actually smoke , if he breaths in a little bit he will have THC in his body then hes fucked..its stupid , as most parties for teenagers will have dope at them , that pretty much destroys his social life..

when i was at school a similar thing happened to me and two of my mates
we were "seen" by a member of the public smoking a few joints in a car at lunchtime although we tried to say it was just a ciggy. So we all got put on the Rubicon contract and had to do random urine tests i was stood down for one week and was told i had to do a test on my first day back. During the week i was stood down i smoked alot of cannabis and got my thc levels quite high so i could still smoke and pass my tests i just had be carefull to smoke less than i did before my last test. Then i started purchasing a cleanser called General tonic from hardys heathy living it cleaned my system of thc quite notibly for my tests i could still have a social life after school and on weekends bit of a bad choice now as i look back - i was a capable student but i just never bothered to study or or work hard enough at school i could have a much better job than laying concrete haha

laying concrete is better than cleaning rented houses that have had about 10 "cuzzy bro's" pissing in a hole in the wall, and chucking rotten seafood out on the lawn and left there. Trust me, theres some real shit jobs out there. Laying concretes a good job, you should be making around 15-25 dollars an hour depending on your skill. You cant get more than 13 cleaning up after filthy animals.

Thing is those kids will be just sent to another school, its a bit of a waste of time really. How many employers look up high school historys? Not many, if anything they'll look up you marks, but a report from a previous employer is a way better indicator.
It will have a negligable effect on their futures, but the disruption to their education outways the punishment imo.
