Check this out comrades.
2200 CANNABIS PLANTS RECOVERED BY POLICE.
Police recovered some 2200cannabis plants in thier annual drive around Mid and South Canterbury to find the illegal drug.
The recovery work, which involved crews in helecopters spotting and retrieving plants, was part of a nation wide police campaign against cannabis called Operation Emma.
Seargeant Mike Miron, in charge of the Mid-South Canterbury operation, said today most of the cannabis was in riverbed or scrub areas.
A larger percentage of the plants were found in South Canterbury.
The cannabis recovered ranged from seedlings to mature plants and the operation took in rivers and scrub areas between the Rakaia and Waitaki rivers.
Heicopters flew solidly for a week, with at least two days spent in Mid Canterbury.
Mr Miron said the number of plants recovered was down from 3500 last year and 4500 in 2004. No patches were booby- trapped to deter unwanted attention.
He said several known growers were currently serving jail terms, but police were also targeting people associated with the class c controlled drug.
All plants recovered were disposed of by police, who are continuing thier investigations into who was growing them.
The cannabis growing season is far from over, though, and people who come across plants should contact police in thier area.
The information will be treated confidentialy.
I am going to reply to Mr Miron by way of a letter to the editor, my main concern with this article relates to the statement about people serving jail terms as a result of Operation Emma.
I fail to see how this could be so ,as we all know the process takes more than a couple of weeks to facilatate (being arrested ,charged, and sentenced.) And know of no persons having had the misfotune of appearing before the local courts as yet,and I read the local court news religously.
I will publish my letter in this forum, and any reply that I may recieve. _________________ "If you tremble of indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

I interpreted it as an explanation of why there was less plants this year than the past two years - because growers are in jail. In other words, more of the same old PR exercise, cops patting themselves on the back and trying to boast about what a good job they did. Funny how they try to turn around the fact that they found less this year by saying its only cause they arrested the growers. Hah.

I will post my letter to the editor, although they refused to print it.
they claim the mention of the errested people was nothing to do with opperation Emma, in response I said that the article was misleading in that case, as it was about opperation Emma.
The paper does not appear to want to discuss the matter further!!!!
Make up your own mind.
Dear sir,
I read with interest the article in the Ashburton 17/02/2006,relating to the recent police cannabis ercovery operation, in the Mid South Canterbury area, in particular the statement made by Sergeant Mike Miron about several known growers presently serving jail terms, as a result of operation Emma.
To the best of my knowledge the operation took a week to carry out, and started a few weeks ago.
As such convictions are a matter of public knowledge, could Sergeant Miron please inform me where I might be able to read about the arrests, convictions, and sentancing of the aformentioned individuals, as I have seen nothing in the local papers to support his statement.
As it costs the New Zealand taxpayer about $2.500 per hour to fly the chopper, not to mention the oncillery costs of valuable police man hours, and the police resources that are tied up to facilitate this free joy ride for the boys, I fail to see how the police can continue to justify these operations, when they recover about one days supply of the total cannabis grown in the country.
I personaly feel that our money could be better spent on aprehending some serious criminals, and not be wasted on what I feel is group of harmless individuals, growing a small amount of the drug for thier own use, rather than support gang related criminal activity, by buying there product from comercial growers, who control the industry.
I would much rather see the Government control it as they do tobacco and alchahol and not make criminals of our youth, and by thier action help supply the gangs with further revenue.
Yours sincerely, concerned taxpayer. _________________ "If you tremble of indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"
