What has he Dunne now?

Cataloging the abusive hypocritical statements of Peter Dunne MP

Peter Dunne MP Mr common sense? Standing up for families? Yeah right! Peter Dunne is nothing more than a shameless political opportunist, master of hypocrisy and minister of dirty tricks. This page lists all of the offensive and abusive statements he has made against law reformers.

We don't need to trade insults back, he's doing a grand job of putting his hypocrisy in black and white for all to see. So read these quotes from Dunne, and wonder what can he do to top this. And then email Dunne and ask him to stop playing the man and start playing the ball. Will he debate the issues, or is he a chicken?

More about Dunne in our Peter Dunne MP database page - includes contact details and voting record.

Have you been personally attacked by Dunne? Do you know of an offensive statement by Dunne not on this list? Let NORML know, email: webmaster@norml.org.nz.

9th Dec 2003 Dunne makes a mistake (on a Tuesday) when he says has been waiting for three days for Nandor to "in any way acknowledge" the 25-year Christchurch School of Medicine study. He missed the fact that Nandor did comment on the study, on Sunday the 7th!

Of course it wouldn't be a proper Dunne PR unless there was some more offensive language. According to Dunne "Nandor and his mates" have a "flaky world view". And then law reformers are described as "Nandor's flying circus with his gimmicky debates."

3rd Dec 2003 Dunne announces he won't be at tonight's cannabis debate with an offensive characterisation of Nandor's debating skills:

"Mr Tanczos’s disjointed, befuddled ramblings in favour of widespread drug-taking"

27th Nov 2003 Dunne attacks Nandor's call for police to stop arresting cannabis users and concentrate on the drug P:

"a new height in hypocrisy and a new low in unprincipled opportunism".

"Are there no depths to which he will not stoop to promote his pro-cannabis obsession?"

"he's playing scumbag politics"

Scoop: 27/11/03 Dunne: Nandor sinks to new pro-cannabis low

28th Oct 2003 Dunne attacks both Nandor/the Greens AND the Progressive Coalition who he calls "mentally deranged".

"United Future leader, Peter Dunne, today called on the Progressive Party’s entire membership, MP’s Jim Anderton and Matt Robson, to stop debating Green MP, Nandor Tanczos, over cannabis abuse “as the fumes are clearly driving them nuts”.

“As the Progressives gaze into the dustbin of history which is their immediate future, they have been forced to associate with the self-confessed dopesmoker Tanczos in order to get some desperately-needed publicity,” he said.

“I can only conclude that the Progressives cuddling up to the dopesmokers has left them mentally deranged and I urge them to seek immediate professional help,” concluded Mr Dunne.

22nd Sept 2003 Dunne makes public an email sent to him by Greens and NORML webmaster Stuey infringing authors copyright and making public his families name and address.

“As a prime example of the usual level of Green political debate, this is extremely instructive,” said Mr Dunne.

“It never lifts itself above the level of crude personal abuse; it lacks good grammar and spelling; and all its assertions fail the test of being backed by reasoned logic.

“Noting the time at which the email was sent, I can only assume Stuey’s head was adversely affected by all the evening fumes,” he said.

18th Sept 2003 In a debate in Parliament on the Smokefree legislation Dunne attacks tobacco control officers, calling them ‘health Nazis’, ‘contemptible’ and ‘the lowest form of lowlife imaginable’.

22nd Aug 2003 Dunne replies to an email sent by Greg Soar of patients' organisation Greencross with the comment "this garbage is not worth replying to". It appears he clicked Reply All and inadvertently included his response to Greg as well as his colleagues.

14th Aug 2003 Dunne turns down the offer of a public debate with Nandor in his Oharui-Belmont electorate.

"I wouldn't have Nandor in my electorate - it would lower the house values," he said.

13th Aug 2003 Dunne's response to Nandor pointing out that Dunne has tried cannabis, implies that the Greens always lie.

"Mr Dunne said that ... he didn't anticipate that the Green MP would have the courage or the integrity to answer.

"We'll either get waffle and bluster, or an embarrassed silence. But what we never get from the Greens - particularly on drug issues - is the truth."

Scoop: 13/08/03 Who's your dealer, Nandor?

11th Aug 2003 As United continues to backslide over medical cannabis, Dunne tries to spin the news, and slips in an attack on the hundreds of people who made submissions to the Health Select Committee Inquiry.

"The issue of legalising cannabis for medical use was entirely separate, Mr Dunne said, reaffirming the party's position that if this was ever to be done, it should be on the basis of medical and scientific evidence, and "not the addled submissions of recreational pot-smokers and Green MPs".

Scoop: 11/08/03 Anti-cannabis stand here to stay

08 Aug 2003 With the release of the Health Select Committtee Inquiry report, Dunne attacks the Greens, accusing them of promoting drugs.

“The Greens’ obsessive campaign to get New Zealanders smoking cannabis continues unabated, despite the very clear message from the voters that they do not like pro-cannabis policies,” said Mr Dunne.

“Unlike the Greens, New Zealanders are very aware that cannabis use is the gateway to social and educational failure for our kids as well as leading to regular use of more devastating drugs like ‘P’."

Scoop: 08/08/03 Green's pro-cannabis stance a loser with voters

10 Mar 2003 Dunne proves he's a warmonger and attacks anti-war protesters.

"Today the Greens will boycott the State luncheon for Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, and instead will demonstrate noisily outside Parliament for the right of Saddam Hussein to murder and oppress all Iraqis," he said.

"This boycott will no doubt lift the intellectual level of the lunch table conversation ...

Scoop: 11/08/03 Dunne urges consistency on the Greens

July 2001 Dunne labelled tobacco control laws a failure, despite the fact that for 10 years now New Zealanders have reduced their tobacco use by over 30 percent.

June 2001 Dunne tells the Select Committee Inquiry into Cannabis that although the current cannabis laws are not working, he does not want them to change. But then he went on to say that first-time offenders under the age of 20 charged with possession should not get a conviction. They should have education and treatment. Sounds like law reform to NORML - why does he now block any sort of reform?

In 1999, Dunne voted for the Sale of Liquor Amendment Act No. 2, which lowered the drinking age from 21 to 18. He opposed putting health warning labels on alcohol vessels.

In 1997, Dunne was the only Member of Parliament to vote against legislation that proposed raising the age at which young people could be sold tobacco from 16 to 18 years. He also defended the voluntary advertising code between the Government and the tobacco industry.

In 1991, Dunne lobbied for investment certainty for the tobacco industry.
