Hi there
My name is Steve and I have some questions for Peter Dunne. I voted for united future in the last election due
to the basic common sense used in policies. I have been just reading over your site and have read your FAQ, and I
am unhappy to find that you don’t support the law reform for the use of medical cannabis.
I am unlucky, and have just had a horrible year including a knee and then a shoulder reconstruction. But on
top of that I am allergic to paracetamol and aspirin(its called angioedema). So after getting out of hospital
both times round I have had to put up and shut up and live in pain. My doctor suggested to me to try cannabis
as pain relief which really surprised me. I tried it and I didn’t like the effects on my lungs but as pain relief
it is actually very effective. After that I purchased a vaporizer and started researching cannabis to see
the other effects it was having on me. I have found that it seems to beneficial for this use, I have found that
there are problems for teens with links to mental illness. All and all I found that it promotes thinking
outside the box and that people who use it are not any a burden on the society.
I believe now from time to time that I will use cannabis for recreational purposes, as it is
relaxing and is far better than going out and getting drunk which I have never enjoyed. I
know that what I am doing is illegal, but I consider myself as a active member of society who
will always aim for the greater good.
I look forward to your reply as I don’t think that I could vote for a party that apposes some thing
that has helped me deal with pain.
Steve
Dear Steve,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the medicinal use of cannabis.
United Future will not be supporting legislation to allow this, not because of our objection to cannabis, but simply because such legislation is unnecessary.
There is an established process in New Zealand for approving new medicines and medicinal products through Medsafe and it is our view that those wishing to pursue the availability of cannabis based medicinal products ought to follow those procedures. If the outcome of that process were to sanction the medicinal use of cannabis, United Future would not stand in
the way of that.
Yours sincerely,
|
