Methcon's proposed solutions to meth are just a con, says Chris Fowlie, spokesperson for drug law reform group NORML.
"Former policeman Mike Sabin is keen to drum up business, but his ideas are just more of the same failed policies that have got us into the mess we're already in.
"Calling for more of the same is just nuts! We've tried punitive sanctions for eighty years but it has not worked.

NORML NEWS SUMMER 2008
Former Minister of Health Pete
Hodgson ordered officials to pave
the way for New Zealand doctors to
prescribe the cannabis extract Sativex.
Sativex is an extract of whole cannabis
from the UK that is sprayed into the
mouth and quickly absorbed by the mucus
membranes, allowing immediate relief
and easy dosage - without the smoke.
A draft application form for doctors
obtained by Norml News says Sativex
will be approved under s8 of the Misuse
of Drugs Act and s109 and s29 of the
Medicines Act for “nausea, anorexia and
wasting (cachexia) associated to cancer and
AIDS, or chronic pain (including cancer
pain) for which other pain relief treatments
are ineffective, or have significant/severe
adverse side-effects; or neuropathic pain
(associated with conditions including
multiple-sclerosis, stroke, cancer, spinal
cord injury, severe physical trauma and
peripheral neuropathy resulting from
diabetes) or muscle spasm and spasticity
associated with MS or spinal cord injury.”

Medsafe papers obtained by
Norml News.

NORML NEWS SUMMER 2008
The New Zealand Drug Foundation says too much time and energy has been spent on party pills, at
the expense of a rational discussion on New Zealand’s third most popular recreational
substance. It has launched “Let’s Talk About Pot”, calling on the public of New Zealand to
focus on a subject most politicians would rather ignore, writes WILL DE CLEENE.

NORML NEWS SUMMER 2008. BY ABE GRAY
Down in Dunedin we have been taking matters in to our own hands. On the heels of our successful hot-boxing
of the Dunedin Central Police station two J Days in a row, we’ve established a weekly mini-J Day on the
Otago University campus, Friday 4:20, which as you can imagine is held on Fridays at 4:20pm, on the Union
Lawn. This weekly event has become a safe zone, where cannabis smokers know they can come and smoke in
peace, safe from persecution and arrest, in a fun, social atmosphere.

NORML NEWS SUMMER 2008. BY HARRY CORDING (Additional reporting by Chris Fowlie)
The government wants to introduce a new offense of driving under the influence of illegal
drugs. Is it necessary - or reefer madness in a fluoro vest? Does the government need
something else to arrest us for? And with cannabis the most popular illegal drug, the question
arises: is stoned driving dangerous?

NORML NEWS SUMMER 2008. BY CHRIS FOWLIE
Customs have finally succeeded in having an issue of Cannabis Culture magazine banned. The May/June 2007 issue, imported from Canada and distributed by The Hempstore, was sent to the Office
of Film and Literature Classification. In a decision released in late October, the Office ruled the issue “objectionable”, meaning it cannot be sold or read in New Zealand.

British cannabis use has declined sharply in the three years following the government’s decision to make possession a non-arrestable offence, according to the latest figures from the UK Home Office’s annual Crime Survey.
"With cannabis in the headlines here again, it's important to acknowledge that moving away from prohibition is not associated with an increase in use," said NORML's spokesperson Chris Fowlie.

Advocates of evidence-based cannabis laws today commended the New Zealand Drug Foundation's efforts in kick-starting a rational conversation about cannabis, but said they risked falling into the same trap they sought to avoid.
Chris Fowlie, spokesperson for the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), said he was pleased to be invited to present ideas for effective cannabis laws in the latest issue of the Drug Foundation newsletter.
"Whatever your take on the health effects of cannabis – and we all have our opinions – it is clear that prohibition has not worked, and a drugs policy re-think is in order," said Mr Fowlie in a guest column written for Matters of Substance.

Although scientific research indicates that cannabis actually has far less impact on the psychomotor skills needed for driving than alcohol does, and is seldom a causal factor in car crashes, the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) supports safe driving behaviour and promotes a set of "Principles for Responsible Cannabis Use", which includes "no driving".
However, NORML has some serious concerns regarding drug testing drivers.

Scientists at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, have found that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, may prevent the development of prion diseases, the most well-known being "mad cow disease" or BSE (bovine spongiforme enzephalopathy).
It is believed that the BSE may be transmitted to humans, where it is known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The condition is often fatal and spreads easily.
"The latest study adds to the huge amount of scientific evidence supporting the medicinal use of cannabis," said NORML spokesperson Chris Fowlie.
"Green MP Metiria Turei's bill to allow the medicinal use of cannabis should be supported by any MP with a clear head. Unfortunately most politicians act like mad cows whenever cannabis is mentioned."

DOWNLOAD AND SIGN NORML'S MEDICAL MARIJUANA PETITION!
An estimated 11,000 seriously ill New Zealanders
use cannabis for pain relief and other serious medical conditions.
While the Misuse of Drugs Act already allows the
Minister of Health to approve the medicinal use of
cannabis, not a single application has ever been approved. The process is too onerous and cumbersome and should be changed.
