Posted by norml on Tuesday, May 27 2008 (2929 reads)

About Marijuanabraindead writes:
"Recent weeks have seen a rash of new studies of marijuana hitting the mass media, generating scary headlines like "Smoking Pot Rots Your Gums," "Cannabis Bigger Cancer Risk Than Cigarettes" and "Pot Withdrawal Similar to Quitting Cigarettes. Most of this coverage can be boiled down to a fairly simple equation:

Flawed science + uncritical reporting = misinformation.

Cannabis Research : Study finds no cancer, marijuana connection

Posted by norml on Sunday, May 28 2006 (4625 reads)

About MarijuanaWashington Post, Fri, 26 May 2006

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

Cannabis Research : THC protects heart cells when oxygen is lowered

Posted by norml on Sunday, February 19 2006 (5850 reads)

Medical MarijuanaIsraelian researchers at the Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan demonstrated that THC protects heart cells (cardiomyocytes) against the damage caused by hypoxia (reduced oxygen concentration in the blood) in experimental studies. Pre-treatment of cultures of cardiomyocytes with THC for 24 hours prevented leakage of LDH induced by hypoxia. Leakage of LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) from cells is a sign of cell damage.

Cannabis Research : Unfinished lung study sparks media beat-ups

Posted by drstuey on Wednesday, October 12 2005 (5125 reads)

About MarijuanaSome unfinished research into the health effects of cannabis on the lungs has hit the headlines this week. Prohibitionists have said the research shows that cannabis is worse than tobacco and that pot could be the reason why Maori have a high rate of lung cancer.

NORML say don't believe the hype. Another unpublished study, by a team led by Dr Donald Tashken of UCLA, has found that marijuana smokers have lower rates of cancer than tobacco smokers and even non-smokers. Coming from Tashken, this is particularly remarkable as his previous studies that found marijuana smoke damages lung tissue are commonly cited by anti-drug types in support of harsh drug laws. In fact, Tashken's earlier papers are cited by Richard Beasley in his paper that purports to find an increase in cancer rates.

Posted by norml on Saturday, September 10 2005 (6818 reads)

LawsSeptember 8, 2005 - London, United Kingdom

London, United Kingdom: The downgrading of cannabis to a non-arrestable offense has not been associated with an increase in adolescents' use of the drug, according to survey data published by the United Kingdom's Department of Health.

The Department found that the number of young people who admitted having consumed cannabis in the past year fell from 13 percent to 11 percent in 2004 - the first reported dip in four years.

Cannabis Research : Marijuana Use by Young People: The Impace of State Medical Marijuana Laws

Posted by norml on Saturday, September 10 2005 (4480 reads)

LawsThe debate over medical marijuana laws has included extensive discussion of whether such laws “send the wrong message to young people,” thus increasing teen marijuana use. This is the first report to analyze all available data to determine the trends in teen marijuana use in states that have passed medical marijuana laws.

Nine years after the passage of the nation’s first state medical marijuana law, California’s Prop. 215, a considerable body of data shows that no state with a medical marijuana law has experienced an increase in youth marijuana use since their law’s enactment. All have reported overall decreases of more than the national average decrease — exceeding 50% in some age groups — strongly suggesting that enactment of state medical marijuana laws does not increase teen marijuana use.
