Representatives from drug law reform organisation NORML appeared before the Health select committee this morning, presenting evidence in support of their Medicinal Cannabis petition, which received over 6,000 signatures.
“Political interference to safe access of medicinal cannabis is no longer justifiable,” said Will de Cleene, vice-president of NORML.

Methcon's proposed solutions to meth are just a con, says Chris Fowlie, spokesperson for drug law reform group NORML.
"Former policeman Mike Sabin is keen to drum up business, but his ideas are just more of the same failed policies that have got us into the mess we're already in.
"Calling for more of the same is just nuts! We've tried punitive sanctions for eighty years but it has not worked.

British cannabis use has declined sharply in the three years following the government’s decision to make possession a non-arrestable offence, according to the latest figures from the UK Home Office’s annual Crime Survey.
"With cannabis in the headlines here again, it's important to acknowledge that moving away from prohibition is not associated with an increase in use," said NORML's spokesperson Chris Fowlie.

Public support remains strong for moving away from destructive policies that criminalise cannabis users, says the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).
Spokesperson Chris Fowlie said a poll released by the New Zealand Drug Foundation asked the wrong question, and could not be compared to earlier polls, as the DominionPost had erroneously done today.
"The latest poll asked whether cannabis laws should be made 'tougher' or 'more liberal', but previous polls had asked whether people wanted continued prohibition, decriminalisation or legalisation. If you change the question, of course you will change the result. That's a no-brainer," said Mr Fowlie.

Advocates of evidence-based cannabis laws today commended the New Zealand Drug Foundation's efforts in kick-starting a rational conversation about cannabis, but said they risked falling into the same trap they sought to avoid.
Chris Fowlie, spokesperson for the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), said he was pleased to be invited to present ideas for effective cannabis laws in the latest issue of the Drug Foundation newsletter.
"Whatever your take on the health effects of cannabis – and we all have our opinions – it is clear that prohibition has not worked, and a drugs policy re-think is in order," said Mr Fowlie in a guest column written for Matters of Substance.

NORML is holding its 2007 Conference and AGM on Saturday 24 - Sunday 25 November in Auckland.
The conference, open to all paid-up NORML members, is a great opportunity to meet and strategise with fellow law reform activists. Topics include the upcoming election; medicinal cannabis; fundraising and organisation; media training; and more. There will also be something like a party on the Saturday night.
Registration is essential. We're estimating the conference fee will be around $20 per person, to cover food and also accommodation for out-of-towners (BYO bedding). The venue, in Auckland, will be announced to those who register. Indicate your interest by emailing NORML or call us on 09 302 5255.

Public submissions are now being invited on the Misuse of Drugs (Classification of BZP) Amendment Bill.
This bill seeks to make it illegal to possess and use, sell, supply, import, export or manufacture benzylpiperazine (BZP), phenylpiperazine, and related substances.
Make your views known! Do you think, given the failure of current drug laws, that banning another substance will work? Will it lead to more people using P or drinking alcohol? Do you think other options would be more effective? (eg, enforce the R18 age limit; mandatory warning labels; controls on dosage, pack sizes and ingredients; controls on when and where it can be sold; etc)
The closing date for submissions is Friday, 12 October 2007.

Scientists at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, have found that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, may prevent the development of prion diseases, the most well-known being "mad cow disease" or BSE (bovine spongiforme enzephalopathy).
It is believed that the BSE may be transmitted to humans, where it is known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The condition is often fatal and spreads easily.
"The latest study adds to the huge amount of scientific evidence supporting the medicinal use of cannabis," said NORML spokesperson Chris Fowlie.
"Green MP Metiria Turei's bill to allow the medicinal use of cannabis should be supported by any MP with a clear head. Unfortunately most politicians act like mad cows whenever cannabis is mentioned."

Our widely-ignored cannabis laws and the failed experiment with alcohol prohibition show it will be impossible to ban BZP without causing even more harm.
"The law banning cannabis is routinely flouted and results in the criminalisation of tens of thousands of Kiwis every year," said Chris Fowlie, spokesperson for the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML NZ).

As the Government released a new National Drug Policy, law reformers pointed to two recent reports that had confirmed the dismal failure of drug prohibition.
A new report from the UK, a two-year investigation by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of
Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, said that drug laws are driven by "moral panic", most drugs have been wrongly "demonised" and argued that "whether we like it or not, drugs are and will remain a fact of life".

Today in parliament Green Party MP Metiria Turei tabled a 3000-signature petition organised by NORML NZ in support of her medicinal cannabis bill.
The first vote on the bill has now been delayed until early 2007, to allow more time for MPs to be educated (and lobbied) about the benefits of the bill. So get writing! You can use our "easy e-mail an MP" tool here.

Green Party press release: 6 September 2006
The case of former Commonwealth boxer Daniel Lee Morris, who yesterday admitted using cannabis to relieve pain, highlights the need for Parliament to investigate how best to bring New Zealand into line with other countries that allow access to medicinal marijuana, the Green Party says.
“Mr Morris, who suffers pain from numerous broken bones from his boxing career, now also has to endure a second conviction for cultivation of cannabis and is at risk of imprisonment,” Associate Health Spokesperson Metiria Turei says.

The National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) today welcomed the release of an opinion poll by TV3 and TNS that show two out of three Kiwis support allowing doctors to prescribe cannabis, while pointing to the Stanlake murder enquiry as a tragic example of a medical user drawn into a world of prohibition-related violence.

New Zealand Drug Foundation
Wellington coroner Garry Evans has ignored best practice and a wealth of international evidence in his criticism of New Zealand’s harm-minimisation approach to drug policy and education, the Drug Foundation said today.
Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell said it was disappointing that this emotive issue would be manipulated through misinformation to undermine existing efforts to dealing with young people and drug issues.

The election result has put cannabis law reform back on the agenda, says Chris Fowlie, President of the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
"A hugely expensive campaign to knock the Greens out of Parliament, run by the Exclusive Brethren, was a flop. The so-called "Moral Right" made stopping cannabis law reform a big issue, and they failed dismally," he said.
