archive: Dope grower owns up for wife's sake

LawsMrZippy writes:
"Jul 23, 2004

A cannabis farmer has dobbed himself in for the sake of his pregnant wife.

Police in Invercargill on the South Island said the man alerted them to intruders at his home because he was worried about his pregnant wife's safety.

"He told us his wife had just rung him to say there was someone in their backyard," Senior Constable Brett Pay told the Dominion Post.

But by calling police, the man effectively led them to his cannabis crop hidden in a back shed.

Police arrived at his home to find two men leaving with a large bundle of cannabis plants wrapped in a large sheet.

"These guys might as well have written 'loot' on it," said Pay.

Police arrested the pair but quickly discovered a sophisticated hydroponic cannabis-growing operation in a shed in the back yard.

Naturally, they arrested the home owner too.

"He pretty much sacrificed himself for his wife (knowing police would discover the cannabis). It was only through his own actions he was arrested," said Pay.

He will appear in court next week charged with cultivating cannabis, while the two drug thieves, aged 17 and 18, have been charged with burglary.
