NORML News: Canadian decrim bill, medi-weed fail to pass

Medical MarijuanaNearly one third of patients who received medical cannabis from Health Canada have returned it, saying the government's weed is not worth smoking reports NORML News Winter 2004.

Rather than relieving their symptoms, the low quality has given users nausea and headaches, and tests revealed the government herb contained only half the THC claimed by Health Canada. Furthermore, only 295 ounces have been distributed to 93 registered users, at an estimated cost of C$4.5 million, or C$15,000 per ounce!

The news has also been bad for social smokers, with the Canadian Government's bill to decriminalise cannabis lapsing when parliament rose for the recent federal elections.

The silver lining is that the pro-legalisation New Democrat Party now holds the balance of power. Cannabis Culture magazine publisher and marijuana seed magnate Marc Emery resigned from the Canadian Marijuana Party and put his weight behind the NDP after leader Jack Layton appeared on www.pot-tv.net advocating cannabis legalisation.

"I'm sure that the marijuana vote helped the NDP a lot," NDP activist and Cannabis Culture editor Dana Larsen said, speaking in a haze of smoke at the Toker's Bowl in Vancouver. "I also personally learned a lot about politics and how to get the message to voters and the press. Our movement's goals are being heard, and we are having more influence than ever among politicians at the local and federal level."

The Pot-TV studios in Vancouver were almost destroyed by fire recently, as arsonists targeted nearby Blunt Bros, North America's most popular coffeeshop. The Marijuana Party HQ was also damaged but soon reopened.
