 | NORML News: Med-Pot group beats Uncle Sam |
The directors of a Californian medical marijuana co-op who recently won a pivotal court case against the US Federal Government visited New Zealand in May to offer advice to activists and officials alike reports NORML News Winter 2004.
In April a judge ordered the United States federal government not to raid or prosecute WAMM, the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a California group that grows and distributes marijuana for its sick members.
The group's directors, Mike and Valerie Corral (pictured), said the group plans to plant hundreds of plants. "You better believe it we're going to plant," said Ms. Corral, who along with husband Mike, visited New Zealand recently at the invitation of the Drug Policy Forum Trust (DPFT).
With other medicinal cannabis experts from The Netherlands, Canada, and the United States, the Corrals gave public presentations in Wellington and attended a three-day workshop in Kaikoura to help design a medicinal-cannabis programme for New Zealand.
WAMM's court victory helps clarify the distinction between US federal law and California's 1996 medical marijuana law, which allows people to grow, smoke or obtain marijuana for medical needs with a doctor's recommendation.
WAMM members and their attorneys know that the latest victory is tenuous, with the fight expected to go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Both Mike and Valerie have agreed to continue their involvement on the DPFT medicinal cannabis workgroup, and intend coming back soon.
