 | NORML News: SATIVEX Shows good results |
UK medical marijuana company GW Pharmaceuticals has announced positive results of three studies into different applications of its cannabis-derived oral spray Sativex reports NORML News Winter 2004.
In a Phase III clinical trial with Sativex in 125 patients with neuropathic (nerve damage) pain, a statistically significant improvement in comparison to placebo was achieved in pain as measured on a numerical rating scale. In addition, positive results were obtained in measures including allodynia, pain disability index, quality of sleep, and patients' global impression of change.
The company released results of another Phase III clinical trial in June that showed its cannabis-based treatment reduced spasticity, the spasms and stiffness that afflict as many as three-quarters of people with MS.
Tests of the spray on 58 arthritis patients also showed it helped reduce pain, and improve quality of sleep.
Sativex is currently the subject of regulatory applications in both the UK and Canada. In both countries, upon approval, Sativex will be exclusively marketed by Bayer HealthCare.
