 NORML News: Branch Reports

A round-up from NORML branches around the country from NORML News Summer 2003-4

Auckland

Auckland NORML has kicked off our leg of the Summer Smokin' Tour with a stall at the Grey Lynn Festival. We're having a "dak mob" on December 20 to partake in the festive season. Email dakmob @ norml.org.nz or txt 025 293 2250 to be part of that. We have a full schedule of stalls and events over the summer that we need some help with, including a summer J Day in Albert Park on February 16. We're only allowed one event in Albert Park per year so the May 1st J Day will have to find a new home. To get involved, join up or just find out more, visit our stalls at Aotea and Manukau markets, call into The Hempstore for all the latest information, phone 09 309 8653 or email auckland @ norml.org.nz

Tauranga

The NORML News has gone down a treat in sunny Tauranga. Already a few characters have put their hands up and started spreading the word and rounding up the troops around here. There's even been some talk of putting on a local J Day next year.

Right now we need more people on the ground to help with distributing magazines, lobbying M.P's and planting the seed of cannabis law reform in the minds of the good residents of the Bay of Plenty.

Interested? Call Duncan Eddy on 021 216 5863 or email tauranga @ norml.org.nz

Wellington

Wellington folk have been meeting to get the branch re-established. We need a bunch of keen people to help organise J Day and stalls at events such as the Cuba St Carnival. Keen people willing to help with this or other street action, please contact Phil Saxby, ph 934 1779 or email wellington @ norml.org.nz

Christchurch

Canterbury University NORML wound down the varsity year in style with a campus sausage sizzle and a hemp cookie sale. Plenty of funds were raised and a great time was had by all. A strong contingent also turned for the Cannabis Debate between Nandor and Jim Anderton to wave signs, beat drums and smoke doobies. The highlight was probably putting 'Legalise Cannabis' stickers on the windows of Jim's car! We're also getting things ready for the Merry Cannabis Summer Session in Cathedral Square on December 20. It starts at High Noon and there'll be plenty of freebies to pass around. See ya there! christchurch @ norml.org.nz

Dunedin

Since hot-boxing the Dunedin Police station on J-Day, Dunedin Norml has been very active. We have held regular stalls at the University market day and outside big concerts. This has involved distribution of Norml propaganda, as well as selling papers, screen printed patches, pipes, grinders, cannabis seedlings, and ganja cookies. After a whole year of regular public smoking the cops finally approached us. The cop (who had been called by security) was very timid, and unwilling to discuss the issue once he gave his warning.

It is very clear that the Dunedin police want to keep the cannabis issue as quiet as possible.

Also, we organised for Nandor Tanczos to visit Dunedin. He took part in a very successful cannabis forum, a very irie dinner party and a super irie Norml Gig at the Crown. Thanks to Swa, Irie Eyes, Evolver, Renegade Sound System, Ras Boof, Gestalt Switch and The Pukes.

We also entered our J-Day documentary in the Mothra student film festival. It was definitely a crowd pleaser. We also had a pipe & bong making workshop where we made bongs out of light bulbs and pipes out of nitrous canisters. And we also had a cannabis cup with Dunedin indoor, Dunedin outdoor and Nelson outdoor. The Nelson stuff had a slight edge.

Finally, Dunedin Norml Member Bart Acres was interviewed on Pot-TV by Marc Emery while on holiday in Vancouver. Marc was very impressed by our J-Day antics.

Most of the Dunedin crew are chilling in Nelson for the summer. See you in 2004 for more carnage. dunedin @ norml.org.nz

Hawke's Bay

Hawke's Bay Norml is continuing to grow in membership, local support and acceptance. We've seen lots of stencilled prohibition-themed artworks appear on walls around town lately, much to the amusement and enlightenment of passers-by. A bunch of us headed to Wellington for the Norml conference in October, and we're looking forward to J Day on May 1st. If you would like to help with J Day or generally get involved, please contact Mark on 021 124 7620.
