NZ Elections: NORML Action Alert: School Trustees Association Elections

Get ActiveMany cannabis law reform supporters are involved and concerned with local issues, particularly those that affect their families. NORML encourages these people to stand for their children's School Trustees Board, and to support existing Trustees to question the STA's stance on Cannabis Law Reform.

Trustees are simply middle New Zealand, and we need to find ways of getting people who are active and influential in their communities to resist the prohibitionist line, and swing the debate our way.

The School Trustees Association is one of our most stubborn and well publicised opponents, yet many parents and teachers feel strongly that the punitive approach to cannabis is counterproductive.

Important Dates:

Rolls Close: March 3rd
Nominations Open: March 5th
Supplementary Rolls Close: March 17th
Nominations Close: March 19th
Polls Close: Noon, April 2nd

Board of Trustee elections are important as they set the boards up for another 3 years, years in which we definitely hope to make progress.

People may want to stand as supporters of harm reduction, but this does not have to be a key policy plank. It's also important to uncover existing trustees who don't buy into prohibition, rather than just relying on electing new people.

We should aim to get our material into Trustee hands, onto Board agendas and to have an effective presence at the STA conference each year for the next 3 years.

People who don't want to stand could still push the issue of cannabis, kids and 'safety first' during the election period via the media.

We encourage you to stand for election, or to lobby candidates and find their position on the issue.
