 | NORML News: hemp trials extended |
NORML News Winter 2003
Hemp trial permits have been renewed for another year, with proper regulations to allow commercial cultivation still being developed.

The original two-year trial period expired on June 30, leaving growers unsure if they could plant again, and in possession of large quantities of the same stuff as seized from The Hempstore. The "Kiwi Knaster" hemp flower shown above was grown in the King Country at Ototoika ("the blood of the fish"). The fibre is being used for traditional harakiki weaving. Research is also underway at Lincoln, Waikato and Massey universities, including a project using hemp to remove heavy metals from contaminated soils. 19 growers have been licensed so far and will start planting from September.
