NORML News Autumn 2003
Tales from the frontline...
Police recorded 21,034 cannabis offences during 2002, and while this is a reduction of 7.5% from the year before, there is still a story behind every one of these busts. Police claim they do not go around looking for pot smokers to bust, and usually just come across it in the course of other investigations. This gives the impression that the people arrested must be up to something dodgy, but we are contacted by many people who have been busted, and know this is not the case. Here are some tales we’ve heard recently:
- Couple returned home to find their front door kicked in and the house trashed. On the kitchen table, a policemans business card and a note for them to call him at the station. During their search of the premise they had found three plants in a wardrobe. It turns out that the cops had “busted” the wrong address. The couple were charged with possession.
- A women was at home being harassed by her estranged partner who had a non-molestation order against him. Fearing for her safety she phoned the police. They arrived promptly and questioned the couple. The estranged partner informs that the woman had a fifty bag in her pocket. They thanked him, let him leave and arrested the woman.
- Cops were next door to see the neighbour, he bolted and ran through my house. They came back after they had caught their man, and invoked the Misuse of Drugs Act claiming that they could smell cannabis.
- A Search Warrant was gained by the police when a malicious and jealous ex-boyfriend claimed that there was a grow room in the house and that the occupants were dealing “P”. Of course all they found was a pipe and a stale cup of cabbage in an old bread bag on its way to the compost. The house was trashed and invaded by reporters, who were there to witness a “P” bust. The woman of the house was charged with possession. This charged stopped her from going to America to aid her father who is dying of cancer. The compassionless Judge ignored her plea and charged her even though no grow room or “P” was found.
