Cannabis Vote

NZ Herald, Jan 13, 1999

MPs should not be forced to vote along party lines if the Government introduces legislation to decriminalise recreational use of cannabis, says National MP Annabel Young.

She said MPs should be allowed to vote according to their consciences, and she would vote against decriminalisation.

Parliament's health select committee last month recommended that the Government reconsider the legal status of cannabis.

On the mental health effects of the drug, it said evidence suggested most users were unharmed, although cannabis could have a serious effect on people with schizophrenia or psychotic illnesses.
