Drug use climbs

New Zealand Herald, 23 June 1999

Aucklanders are using drugs more than in the past, says the first national survey of recreational drug use, released by the University of Auckland.

Among the 5000 people aged 15 to 45 surveyed by telephone last year, 15 per cent said they used marijuana, an increase on a 1990 poll in the Auckland/Bay of Plenty area. [12%]

Only 1 per cent were daily users.

Ecstasy use had also risen in Auckland, from below 1 per cent in 1990 to 2 per cent, said Professor Sally Casswell, of the university's Alcohol and Public Health Research Unit.

Aucklanders were also using more LSD and magic mushrooms, the use of the former rising from 2 per cent in 1990 to 5 per cent last year.
