Newshawk Competition
Write letters, or collect drug news stories, and win!
Writing letters to newspaper and magazine editors is perhaps one of the most effective things people can do to support cannabis law reform, and sharing news articles relating to drugs is one of the most effective ways people can stay informed about the current state of drug law reform in New Zealand. Therefore, to encourage people to write letters to the editor and to email us newspaper clippings - NORML NZ will award at least two prizes in 2003 to:
- the writer who has the most drug law reform letters published in New Zealand newspapers; and
- the newshawk who gathers the most NZ newspaper articles on cannabis and drug law reform
We haven't decided on the prizes yet - probably a selection of products from the Hempstore, Cannabis Culture magazine and NZ Green calendars, maybe even a grow light - but we do want to reward people who work hard, and we want to encourage some friendly rivalry amongst letter writers and newshawks. Prizes will be listed soon here.
Current League Tables
The race is on: the tally will be updated monthly with the final winners being declared shortly after December 31 2003.

Competition Conditions
- Articles and letters will only be counted if they have been correctly added to the MAP database NZ page.
- MAP Newshawk guidelines should be followed. These cover format of submission and guidelines for suitability of articles.
- The MAP editors decide whether an article is suitable. Newshawks are responsible for ensuring that their newshawk identity is recorded correctly and that articles are added correctly.
- We regret that due to the cost of international freight, we are unable to deliver prizes to foreign residents. If a Newshawk or Letter Writer residing in a country other than New Zealand wins either of our contests, they will have the option of: (1) paying any international freight charges themselves; (2) nominating the next highest-scoring New Zealand resident to win; or (3) donating prizes to the library, charity or community organisation of their choice in New Zealand.
Previous Years
Leading the 2001 Letters table was Stephen McIntyre with 10 letters published. Jason Baker-Sherman was out in front in 2002 with four letters published. Well done guys!
Leading the 2001 Newshawk table was Ken Russell with 95 stories sent in, although Chris Fowlie would have topped the table if he hadn't split his 107 articles between three seperate Newshawk identities: Norml NZ, hempstore.co.nz and ecstasy.org.nz. However Norml NZ did finish in the lead in 2002 with 27 articles posted to MAP NZ News.
